Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Company.

What is Company?

Company is a private messaging platform with built-in end-to-end encryption. It supports servers (group spaces), channels, direct messages, and voice — similar to platforms like Discord, but with real encryption that protects your conversations from everyone, including us.

How does the encryption work?

Every user has a unique pair of cryptographic keys generated on their device. When you send a message, it's encrypted using the recipients' public keys before it ever leaves your device. Only the intended recipients have the private keys needed to decrypt it. We use industry-standard algorithms: ECDH P-256 for key agreement, AES-256-GCM for message encryption, and ECDSA P-256 for signatures. Our servers only ever see encrypted ciphertext.

Can you read my messages?

No. This isn't a policy choice — it's a technical guarantee. Your messages are encrypted on your device before being sent. Our servers store only encrypted data, and we do not hold the keys to decrypt it. Even if our servers were compromised, or if we were compelled by a court order, we physically cannot produce your plaintext messages.

How is Company different from Discord?

Discord can read every message you send — they're stored in plaintext on their servers. Discord also monetizes through Nitro subscriptions and has investor pressure to grow revenue. Company encrypts everything end-to-end by default, collects minimal metadata, runs no ads, and will never sell your data. We're building the group chat experience you're used to, minus the surveillance.

What happens if I lose my encryption keys?

Because we never have access to your private keys, we cannot recover them for you. You should use the device pairing feature to transfer your keys to a second device as a backup. We also support encrypting your key bundle with a password and storing it locally. If you lose all copies of your keys, past messages encrypted to those keys will be unrecoverable.

Is Company open source?

Our client applications are open source so that anyone can audit the encryption implementation and verify we're doing what we say. Transparency is fundamental to trust in an encrypted messaging platform.

How do you make money?

We plan to sustain the project through optional paid features (extra storage, custom themes, server boosts) that don't compromise privacy. We will never run ads or sell user data. Our business model is aligned with your privacy, not against it.

What platforms is Company available on?

Company is available as a web app and as desktop applications for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Mobile apps are planned.
